Two killed in separate car accidents

Two people have been killed within a 12-hour period following separate road traffic accidents in Co Londonderry.

At around 8am this morning a woman was killed when her car collided with a lorry close to Shackleton Barracks in Ballykelly.

A man in the car and the driver of the lorry escaped serious injury but were taken to hospital for treatment.

Police have appealed for motorists to avoid the Ballykelly area where diversions are currently in operation.

The accident followed less than 12 hours after a soldier was killed in Limavady last night.

Corporal Keith Lewis, from Middlesbrough in north-east England, who was based at Shackleton Barracks, was driving a car which was in collision with another vehicle at around 9.30pm last night.

A two-year-old boy and his grandmother, who were in the other car, were taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry for treatment to their injuries.

While the child was discharged after treatment his grandmother was detained overnight. Her condition is said to be stable.
