Jobless total falls but 3,000 redundancies are 'in the pipeline'
The latest regional Labour Market Statistics have revealed that Northern Ireland's unemployment figures have fallen by 3,000 over the past year – but the NIO Economy Minister has warned that there are 3,000 more redundancies in the pipeline.
The figures, published this morning, also show that Northern Ireland's unemployment rate of 5.6% is statistically much better than the EU average of 7.7% and four other UK regions, including, London (6.7%), North East (6.7%), Scotland (6.1%), and the West Midlands (6.0%).
Commenting on the figures, the NIO Minister Ian Pearson said: “The figures show that there are approximately 44,000 people unemployed for the period September - November 2002, which is around 3,000 lower than for the same period last year.
“At 5.6%, the unemployment rate for this quarter is down by 0.6 percentage points from the equivalent figure one year ago and 0.7 percentage points lower from last quarter."
The Minister went on to say that the latest Northern Ireland manufacturing output estimates for the third Quarter of 2002 have remained stable compared with the previous quarter but show a decrease of 2.0% on the same period over the year.
He added: “Output remains some 9% below the highpoint experienced in the first Quarter of 2001 and these figures and our overall performance in recent months is falling behind the average growth in the UK."
Certain sectors, particularly electrical and optical equipment, have experienced difficulties due to global downturns. However, had it not been for the significant decline in this one sector, said Mr Pearson, the overall manufacturing output figure would have risen slightly.
The Minister concluded by saying that there were now challenges to be met and that Northern Ireland "must face them with a spirit of optimism and build on our successes".

NI unemployment figures lowest on record
Northern Ireland’s unemployment rate has fallen to the lowest level on record according to the latest figures released today. The latest labour market figures show the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 4.5% for the period October – December 2004 has fallen from 5.1% in the previous quarter and from 6.3% for the same period last year.
