UDA leader freed on bail
A leading loyalist has been freed on bail at the High Court in Belfast today.
Andre Shoukri, 25, from Sunningdale Gardens in north Belfast, was granted bail of £6,000 and released on the stipulation that he not associate with members of illegal organisations, and observes a curfew and stays clear of north Belfast.
Lord Justice Nicholson said that he had not been convinced that Mr Shoukri would pose a danger to others if he were released.
Andre Shoukri is reputedly the leader of the UDA in north Belfast and is a onetime ally of 'C' Company commander Johnny Adair. He has been in jail since September last year after he was stopped by police in the Rathcoole area. A revolver was found in the vehicle during a search.
Mr Shoukri claimed that the revolver was for his own protection.
The UDA chief is a member of the UDA ruling council which ejected Johnny Adair and his associate John White from the organisation.
