Belfast firm secures Japanese digital TV equipment deal

Belfast-based Amphion Semiconductor Ltd, a world-leading designer of silicon architectures for digital video and broadband wireless 'system-on-a-chip' semiconductors, has won a digital TV equipment deal with Japanese company Lambda Systems Inc.

Lambda Systems, a niche manufacturer of television broadcast and professional studio equipment for the Japanese market, has employed the company's JPEG image compression technology in a new colour video graphics processing system for High-Definition TV production.

Commenting on the deal, JG Doherty, Chief Executive of Amphion, said: "Amphion provides a spectrum of products for consumer digital video and the professional broadcast chain.

"Time and again the company has demonstrated that its total commitment to design excellence and support enables customers like Lambda Systems to reduce engineering costs, accelerate time-to-market, and improve end-product performance."

Licensed for use in silicon microchips developed by IC Corporation – the integrated circuit design division of Lambda Systems – the Amphion's JPEG design has been deployed in a caption generation system called the GRID-MF32HDX.

This high-end system was launched at Japan's 38th International Broadcast Equipment Exhibition in November 2002.
