Shooting investigated by Police Ombudsman
The Police Ombudsman has begun investigating an incident where police opened fire on a suspect.
It is understood that six shots were fired as officers attempted to apprehend a man in the Ardilea Street in the Ardoyne area at around 5pm on Wednesday. No injuries were reported.
Eyewitnesses in the area said officers fired shots after a man, who was driving a car involved in a police chase, fled on foot.
A spokesman for the Police Ombudsman said: “Our investigators have been tasked to the scene and will conduct a thorough, independent and impartial investigation of the incident.”
Sinn Fein have questioned why bullets were fired in a residential area.
Gerry Kelly, the party’s north Belfast assembly member, said: “Whatever this person was or was not at, and none of us know, he was not armed, there was no exchange of fire.
“There had to be another way of apprehending this person as opposed to firing shots. We could have had another dead person in this community tonight.”
The police operation at Ardilea Drive yesterday has been linked to the investigation into the murders of Ed Burns and Joe Jones on Monday.
Anyone with any information about what happened is asked to contact the Police Ombudsman's witness appeal line on 0800 032 7880.
