Devolution and collusion discussed in Washington

The Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern and Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain are among the guests attending the White House ahead of this weekend’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations.

The Taoiseach is expected to brief President George W Bush about the fast approaching devolution deadline after presenting him with the traditional bowl of shamrock.

While Mr Hain said he would shut down parliament if it fails to form a coalition by March 26, Mr Ahern said he believed all side’s demands had been met.

“In the absence of any other item on the agenda, and I think no item on the agenda can come through now, the 26th in my view is fait accompli,” he told reporters in the US Capital.

Other items on the agenda to be discussed include concerns about collusion and the plight of victims.

The McCartney sisters, Pauline and Catherine, whose brother Robert was murdered, are also in Washington while Raymond McCord, who’s sons murder was the subject of a Police Ombudsman’s report will also be present.

Geraldine Finucane, the wife of murdered solicitor Pat, will be in attendance in attempts to seek a thorough public inquiry into his murder.
