Phoenix Natural Gas announces price cuts

Phoenix Natural Gas has today announced prices are to be slashed by more than 14% and possible further reductions are on their way.

The news comes just months after the company increased their tariff by 14.5% last September.

Prices had also been increased in September 2005 by 30% and then by 17% in January 2006, prompting outrage from the Consumer Council.

The move by Phoenix Gas will mean the average domestic bill will fall by around £89 per year.

Peter Dixon, the company’s Group Chief Executive, said: “We made a commitment last October to review the gas price at the end of the winter. Today we are able to confirm a reduction in the price by 14.6% at the end of the month.”

The Consumer Council has said it hopes the company will make further cuts in the future.

Mr Dixon responded saying: “I would hope the news today marks the beginning of a period of price reductions and as part of our commitment Phoenix will be carrying out a further review of reviews of prices by the end of this summer,” he said.

“In arriving at this level of decrease and the commitment to do another review later this year, we have consulted extensively with the Northern Ireland Authority for Energy Regulation, the Consumer Council and the Department for Enterprise, Trade and Investment.”

He concluded: “Phoenix remains committed to working hard to deliver the lowest possible price to our customers.”
