Lansdowne Road redevelopment to go ahead
The redevelopment of one of Ireland’s premier sports grounds has today been given the go-ahead.
Despite fierce opposition and a seven-month review of the project, planners unanimously gave the all-clear for the Irish rugby and soccer to get a new £237 million stadium at Lansdowne Road.
The ageing ground will be transformed into a state-of-the-art 50,000 all-seater stadium based near the affluent Ballsbridge area of south Dublin.
According to the board 23 conditions have been imposed on the developers, however they are unlikely to impede the plans of the IRFU and FAI.
FAI Chief Executive John Delaney said: “This is one of the most significant developments ever for Irish football and we look forward to working with our partners the IRFU and the Government in moving the project forward.
“The project is absolutely critical to the successful development of football long into the future.”
IRFU Chief Executive Philip Browne also welcomed the news, saying: “From the outset, the re-development programme has been the cornerstone of our Strategic Plan for the development of the game at all levels."
The GAA has also welcomed the decision to grant planning permission for the project and stated it was committed to hosting soccer and rugby Internationals in Croke Park in the next couple of years.
