Residents groups challenge city airport expansion
Residents opposed to the expansion of George Best City Airport have won the first round of their legal challenge against plans to expand the facility.
Currently, the passenger cap at the airport located in east Belfast is 1.5 million. However, owners want to increase the number of passengers by one million.
The High Court today granted the five residents groups leave for a judicial review which will be heard on 30 May.
This means there will not be a full examination of a ruling by the Planning Service that the increase was not judged to be a change in the main use of the airport.
Three resident associations made the challenge – Old Stranmillis, Holyland Regeneration and Park Road and District – as well as associations near the airport in Cultra and Kinnegar.
