'Gating' scheme delivering safer communities

An innovative scheme to reduce anti-social behaviour across Belfast has improved the lives of local people and reduced the fear of crime, Criminal Justice Minister David Hanson MP has said.

The pilot alleygating scheme was installed in five areas of Belfast by January 2007 as part of an initiative aimed at reducing crime, anti-social behaviour and fear of crime. Around 180 alleygates have been installed at the rear entries to terraces in Little Americas in north Belfast, Lower Windsor in south Belfast, the Mount in east Belfast and Beechmount and Woodvale in west Belfast.

Welcoming the launch of the Alleygating Information Guide in Belfast today the minister said that the eradication of low level crime can vastly improve the quality of life for residents.

David Hanson said: “Living in an area where low level crime such as vandalism and under-age drinking is a problem can be very stressful for residents. Initiatives such as alleygating tackle this problem head on and can make a real difference.

He continued: “Since being rolled out in areas all over Belfast the feedback we have been receiving has been very positive. Residents have told us that this scheme has helped reduce their fear of crime and improved the quality of life in their areas.

“These important achievements contribute towards the aims in the Government’s Neighbourhood Renewal and Community Safety strategies.”

The pilot project, costing over half a million pounds was co-funded through the Department for Social Development’s Belfast Regeneration Office under the Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy, and by the NIO Community Safety Unit.

Implementation was led by Belfast City Council and Bryson Charitable Group.
