Search begins for new Ombudsman

The British Government has begun its search for the successor to the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman.

Nuala O’Loan, who currently holds the post, is due to stand down in November, after a seven-year term, and adverts are set to run today in the local and national press for the position.

Secretary of State Peter Hain today paid tribute to Mrs O’Loan’s work.

“She has done an excellent job in difficult circumstances, especially on controversial issues when feelings have been understandably running high,” Mr Hain said.

“The post plays a key role in developing and maintaining public confidence in policing and it is crucial that this competition attracted the highest calibre of candidates.

“The principle role of the Police Ombudsman is to provide an independent impartial police complaints system for the handling of complaints against the police in Northern Ireland.”

While public opinion has shown she has a high level of public support, unionists have persistently criticised her investigations.
