Sinn Fein announces policing board members
Sinn Fein has announced the names of three nominees who will serve on Northern Ireland’s Policing Board.
Foyle Assembly member Martina Anderson has been confirmed, and will be joined by party policing spokesman Alex Maskey and North Antrim MLA Daithi McKay.
One of the nominees, Ms Anderson, is a former IRA prisoner, who was convicted of conspiracy to cause explosions in England in 1986. She is the party's director of engagement with unionists.
The three will sit on the board which holds senior police personnel to account.
Mr Maskey, the first ever republican to serve as Lord Mayor of Belfast, said: “We want to play a constructive role on the board but we will not shy away from challenging, or criticising, or questioning policing decisions and policy when the need arises.”
The announcement comes just a week after Sinn Fein leaders held their first formal talks with Policing Board officials.
Sinn Fein members voted to support policing in Northern Ireland for the first time in the party’s history at the ard fheis at the end of January.

Man Extradited From US Over Historical Child Sex Abuse
A 68-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for a series of indecent assaults on a child in the 1970s. Damien Desmond Anderson, originally from L'Derry, was extradited from the US to face justice. He was convicted of 12 counts of indecent assault against a female who was 11 years old at the time of the abuse.

New £4.3m Grant To Boost Business Innovation
Economy Minister Conor Murphy has launched the Business Innovation Grant (BIG), a new £4.3 million initiative designed to stimulate innovation and enhance productivity among Northern Irish businesses. The scheme, developed by Invest Northern Ireland and delivered in partnership with Innovate NI, is open to micro-businesses, sole traders, and SMEs.
