Northern Ireland to be included in marriage bill
The Secretary of State, Peter Hain has announced that inclusion of Northern Ireland will be sought in the Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Bill.
The Bill seeks to protect those faced with being forced into marriage, under duress and without consent. People will be able to apply to court to have an injunction made to prevent others forcing them into marriage, or being taken out of the country to be married abroad.
Speaking today, Mr Hain said: “Forced marriage is a human rights abuse that causes misery to its victims. It is expressly prohibited by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and I strongly support the added protection that the Forced Marriages Bill will provide.
“It is important that potential victims in Northen Ireland should receive the same level of protection as others elsewhere in the United Kingdom.”
The Bill has received widespread support from organisations working to prevent forced marriage in England and Wales.
Inclusion of Northern Ireland, together with other aspects of the Bill, will be considered by the Grand Committee of the House of Lords on Thursday 10 May 2007.

MLAs Debate Human Trafficking Bill
MLAs are debating a human trafficking bill, drawn up by DUP peer Lord Morrow. It is understood that the new Bill contains a clause that would make it illegal to pay for sex, a clause that has been opposed by Justice Minister David Ford. However, both the DUP and Sinn Féin are understood to be in favour of the clause.

Majority Of MLAs Favour Same Sex Marriage
A majority of MLAs have voted in favour of legalising same sex marriage in Northern Ireland, however the DUP has lodged a petition of concern ahead of the vote. This means that while the majority favoured same sex marriage the motion was lost. 53 MLAs voted in favour and 51 voted against. Another politician abstained from the vote.

Work Underway For Free Hospital Parking In Northern Ireland
Work has begun at several hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of the preparations for the introduction of free car parking in May 2026. Health and Social Care Trusts have been actively preparing for the implementation of a new traffic management system since the Hospital Parking Charges Act was passed in 2022.
