Union seeks talks on water job cuts
Union representatives have said they want to begin talks to discuss 500 job cuts in Northern Ireland's water service.
The cuts are part of a three-year cost-cutting initiative and Albert Mills of the Transport General Workers Union wants an urgent meeting with Conor Murphy, Regional Development Minister at Stormont.
"It was the unions that led the fight against water charges and we have them deferred for a year now and we continue that fight against water charges," Mr Mills said.
"The infrastructure, as they keep telling us, is falling down around our ears, but these jobs will go to the private sector and contractors. That's what we believe, as happened in England and Wales in the privatisation."
The new plan, which started operating in April, will cut staff down to approximately 1,400.
Industrial, engineering, scientific and administration divisions are all expected to be affected.
