NI aid worker ‘kidnapped’ in Somalia
An aid worker from Northern Ireland is one of two people missing and feared kidnapped in north Somalia.
The man was believed to have gone missing yesterday, along with a Kenyan colleague, from the semi-autonomous Puntland region yesterday. Both were working for Care International.
A spokeswoman for Care International said they were working to secure their safe return.
“They have been missing since yesterday morning. We are working with the local authorities to ensure their prompt release,” she said.
“We are confident that a solution will be found soon.”
Puntland has been relatively peaceful in recent years, and runs itself independently from the rest of Somalia.
However, Somalia has a troubled history of abductions and assassinations of local and foreign aid workers, particularly in the self-declared independent enclave of Somaliland.
Authorities have generally blamed militant Islamists for the attacks on foreign workers.

Health Minister Mike Nesbitt has announced the launch of a new 'Pharmacy First for Sore Throat' service, which will be available in community pharmacies across Northern Ireland from 1 December 2024. The service will offer advice, assessment, and treatment for people aged five and over who are suffering from a sore throat.
