Belfast City Council questioned over cheque fraud
Police have revealed they are investigating allegations of cheque fraud at Belfast City Council.
The Building Control department is at the centre of the inquiry and it is alleged that a number of cheques were either stolen or cashed.
A firm of solicitors had contacted the council to say that a cheque it had sent as part of a building control application had been cashed for an amount “much greater” than for what it was made out.
An audit was then carried out by the council and it discovered two other cheques had also disappeared.
At least one cheque appeared to have been cashed, and the other two were stopped by the banks once they became aware of the situation.
No council officers have been arrested and they are cooperating fully with the police.
