Former DUP lawyer fined for assault
A former DUP mayor of Coleraine has been convicted of assault, in an incident that took place last year.
Desmond Stewart of Parker Avenue in Portrush was fined £300 for attacking a press photographer outside Antrim Courthouse last October.
Stewart had arrived for sentencing on charge of electoral fraud when the incident occurred.
A defence lawyer for Stewart said his client’s life had been “in tatters” at the time of the assault and he had “deeply regretted his actions”.
Stewart has since left the DUP.

Pedestrian Injured In Belfast Hit-and-Run
The PSNI have issued an appeal for information following a hit-and-run incident in the Botanic Avenue area of Belfast in the early hours of Thursday morning. Officers were called to the scene shortly before 1.30am after a male pedestrian was struck by a maroon Mazda. Despite being injured, the pedestrian left the area before police arrived.

Detectives in Belfast are investigating a suspected arson attack on a 5G mast in the Andersonstown Road area. The incident occurred around 9.55pm on Wednesday, November 13th. Detective Sergeant Faulkner confirmed that officers attended the scene alongside the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, who successfully extinguished the blaze.

A high profile murder trial has heard that the accused, Hazel Stewart, feared her former lover - a dentist - gave her too much laughing gas before a sex session on his dentist's chair. Mrs Stewart, 47, is denying murdering her husband, Trevor Buchanan, 32, and her former lover Colin Howell's wife, Leslie, 31, in May 1991.
