Ruane cuts first sod at Glengormley building project
Education Minister, Caitriona Ruane, today cut the first sod at a £1m building project at Edmund Rice College, Glengormley.
The sod cutting marks the start of building work to create a new Technology & Design Block at the school.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister highlighted the importance she attached to providing first-class Technology & Design accommodation and said: “Technology & Design is increasingly important in today’s global economy and our future economic success will depend on developing the skills and talents of our young people in this important area of the curriculum.
“This building work is funded from the Specialist Accommodation Programme, which is designed to address deficiencies in science, technology & design and ICT accommodation in our schools. I am committed to working to provide all of our children with the opportunity to learn in modern, fit for purpose accommodation; accommodation that can help us prepare our young people for the challenges ahead.
“When the work is completed, it will provide the students of Edmund Rice College with the enhanced learning opportunities they so richly deserve.”
Following completion of the new block, the school’s existing technology accommodation will be refurbished, at a cost of £400,000, to provide Home Economics accommodation for the school.

Work Underway For Free Hospital Parking In Northern Ireland
Work has begun at several hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of the preparations for the introduction of free car parking in May 2026. Health and Social Care Trusts have been actively preparing for the implementation of a new traffic management system since the Hospital Parking Charges Act was passed in 2022.

SF Calls For Action On NI Mental Health Services
Sinn Féin has called for more to be done to improve mental health services across the north of Ireland. The party's mental health spokesperson, MLA Órlaithí Flynn, made the call after the release of the Registrar General's 2023 Annual Report which has highlighted an increase in deaths by suicide in 2023.
