Jobs boost for Kilroot power station

A new gas-burning power station costing more than £150 million is to be built in County Antrim.

AES Kilroot power station, near Carrickfergus produces around one third of Northern Ireland’s electricity and it is understood around 80 jobs will be created – 40 permanent posts and 40 contract positions – when the plant becomes operational in 2010.

An additional 200 jobs will be created during the construction, which will last two and a half years.

AES, its American owners will invest £150-200m on a new gas turbine plant which will add a further 450 megawatts of generating capacity.

Development Director Shane Lynch said: “Our planned investment in new capacity at Kilroot is in response to the strong growth in demand, the emergence of a single electricity market for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and the need to replace ageing facilities elsewhere within the all-island system.

“The advantages of the Kilroot site places us in an excellent position to avail of this opportunity.”

The company also said planning permission already exists for a 3km connection to the nearby gas network.

“We look forward to working with the regulatory authorities to bring this capacity on stream such that competition can prevail in this new market,” said Christoph Waltenspul, AES Vice President of business development in Europe.
