New ChildLine base for Derry
Television presenter and founder of ChildLine Esther Rantzen has officially opened the charity’s new base in Londonderry.
The service, provided by the NSPCC has been open in Northern Ireland since 1999. The new base at Queen’s Quay has been largely funded by the Department of Education.
Speaking to the Derry Journal, Ms Rantzen said she was delighted to be visiting the site.
“Every month ChildLine in Northern Ireland take more than 1,000 calls from local children. And yet we know that there are many more children who are trying to get through. Perhaps they might only build up the courage to do so that once and it is therefore vitally important that we have someone on the other end of the phone there to answer the call,” she said.
ChildLine relies heavily on volunteers and it is hoped new volunteer councillors will be recruited for the area.
The 24-hour free service ChildLine number is 0800 1111.

Children in Northern Ireland contacted Childline almost every day last year about suicide, according to the NSPCC. Children aged between 12 and 15 were considered the most at risk. Girls are six times more likely to contact the charity than boys.

First NI Motorway Service Stations Announced
Northern Ireland’s first ever motorway service stations have been granted planning permission. Currently, motorists have to leave the motorway in order to find a service station, but the two developments planned for the M2, along with the two to follow on the M1, will offer drivers direct slip road access from both directions.

8,000 New Homes Needed Across Ards Area
NI Water has announced that the Ards and North Down area will need around 8,000 new homes by 2030. The company made the announcement at the Ards and North Down Borough Council meeting, to update representatives on infrastructure plans going forward and the level of investment needed for the Council area.
