‘Suspicious’ fire at Downpatrick Baptist church
Detectives in County Down have launched an investigation into a fire at a Baptist church.
Downpatrick Baptist Church was extensively damaged in the blaze that occurred at about 6pm on Saturday evening.
The fire at the Church Street building has been described as “suspicious”.
Police revealed the investigation has been hampered due to the damage caused to the structure of the building.
SDLP councillor Colin McGrath said this was an unprovoked attack on the Baptist community.
“It is entirely possible that they may think that, because of these attacks, in some shape or form they are not welcome in Down District,” he said.
“I certainly want to assure them that is not the case. These are the actions of one two or three individuals and are certainly not reflective of the community.”
Police are appealing to anyone with any information about the fire to contact them.
