Three remanded on terrorism charges

Three men have been remanded in custody, following an appearance in court today in relation to arrests made during the disturbances in Carrickfergus, County Antrim at the weekend.

The men are being charged with terrorism offences following the shooting of a police officer on the Castlemara Estate.

Thomas Duff, 40, John Rafferty, 38, and Alan James Tylan, 36 were all arrested for having in their possession articles for use in terrorism including batons, a crossbow, knives and incapacitant spray.

Defence lawyer Seamus Leonard said that his clients are contending that there is no evidential basis to bring the first charge under the Terrorism Act.

The defendants were remanded in custody until 21 August to appear again by video link from Maghaberry Prison.

A total of six people have been arrested in connection with the trouble at the weekend and a 21-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder has been released without charge.

A 17-year-old man is also due to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court on 17 August in relation to the loyalist clashes in Carrickfergus.
