Belfast hospital closes unit due to infection
Belfast City Hospital officials have said that the closure of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is the result of two patients contracting a multi-resistant bacterial infection.
A statement from the City Hospital last night said the unit should re-open under the guidance of the hospital’s Infection Control Team within the next 36 hours.
The ICU has been closed to new admissions with emergency patients being treated in the hospital’s High Dependency Unit.
Consultant medical microbiologist at the hospital, Dr Ann Loughrey, said that a deep clean is now under way in the unit and that an investigation into how the patients contracted the infection will take place.
Dr Loughrey also said that the ‘acinetobacter’ bacteria were present in both outdoor and indoor healthcare premises and are among the many organisms which can affect vulnerable patients in the intensive care unit.
The two infected patients are now being treated in isolation on other wards.

Work Underway For Free Hospital Parking In Northern Ireland
Work has begun at several hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of the preparations for the introduction of free car parking in May 2026. Health and Social Care Trusts have been actively preparing for the implementation of a new traffic management system since the Hospital Parking Charges Act was passed in 2022.

Patients And Staff Tested For Bacterial Infection at Altnagelvin Hospital
A number of staff members and patients at Altnagelvin Hospital in L'Derry are being tested and treated for the bacterial infection Streptococcus Group A. A spokesperson for the Western Trust, said: "Commonly the Streptococcus Group A symptoms are sore throats and minor skin conditions.

NI Misses Cancer Treatment Targets
Northern Ireland's hospitals have failed to meet target times for the treatment of patients referred for suspected cancer, a new report by the Department of Health revealed. Its guidelines say 95% of patients should begin their treatment within 62 days. Last December however, the figure stood at 81%, which was the third monthly fall in a row.
