QUB Student Jailed For ‘Mooning’
A Queens University student has been imprisoned in Africa after allegedly “mooning” at the home of a Senegalese governor.
Patrick Devine, 19, from Dunfanaghy in Donegal was arrested on 27 July for allegedly dropping his trousers as a dare outside the house in Saint Louis, Senegal.
The QUB student had been working in the country as part of a Teaching & Projects Abroad (TPA) programme. He described his experience on the social networking website Bebo as “the worst week of his life” after he contracted chicken pox and had part of his small toe amputated after he caught an infection.
It is understood Mr Devine is sharing a prison cell with 40 others and he may be remanded in custody until the end of the month.
The Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin confirmed staff from its embassy in Nigeria have been working to secure the release of the teenager.
“The Department is aware that an Irish student has been arrested and we are providing consular assistance through our embassy in Abuja, Nigeria,” a spokesman said.
