NIACAB launch new employment report
A new report entitled 'Work It Out!' was launched today by the Northern Ireland Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux (NIACAB) and shows that the majority of CAB clients are unaware of their employment rights.
The research also shows that 86% of CAB clients are not in receipt of one or more of their basic employment rights and highlights that 4% of CAB clients have actually been dismissed for trying to assert a statutory employment right.
Commenting on the report, Derek Alcorn, NIACAB Chief Executive, said: “The lack of awareness of basic employment rights is unacceptably high. Many employees are working without written terms and conditions of employment and this can lead to exploitation. We are particularly concerned when employees attempting to exercise their rights are dismissed.
"The report clearly illustrates that the government needs to provide increased funding for information and advice services to the public on employment matters.”
The report also contains returns from CAB offices across Northern Ireland that provided information on the type of employment queries received during a one-month period.
