Business leader highlights need to fight crime

Chamber of Commerce President, Victor Haslett has spoken out forcefully on the need for the business community to play its part in tackling soaring crime levels.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Annual Banquet of the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Haslett said that the Northern Ireland community must not allow itself to regard violent crime as “commonplace".

He said: “Every break-in, every shooting and every firebomb attack undermines the efforts of all of those seeking to build a stronger economy in Northern Ireland.

“We must remember that crime destroys lives, health, hope and property and, if it is not tackled effectively, the very foundations of society itself.”

Mr Haslett acknowledged that the Police Service of Northern Ireland needed public support in beating crime and he urged business leaders to consider how they can play their part. He added: “I believe that the Chamber of Commerce, and others in business can help – we need now to consider how.”

Mr Haslett also urged local politicians to get on with the job of rebuilding local administration and said that local Ministers had performed well during their short term in office. While he recognised that all parties had “massive leaps of faith and trust to make”, he stressed they had "to recognise that problems, however great, can only be resolved by the application of energy, initiative and a willingness to talk".

In closing, the Chamber’s President was upbeat about the economic future of the Province. Praising the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of local businesses, he concluded: “I am more convinced than ever that Northern Ireland will continue to grow and develop its economic capacity.”

The Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce is the oldest and largest of Northern Ireland’s business bodies.

Founded over 200 years ago currently has a membership of more than 1,400 companies and individuals.
