Serious assault victim dies from injuries
A 24-year-old man left critically ill after an assault in west Belfast over the weekend has died in hospital.
Police were already treating the brutal attack on the young man as attempted murder.
The man was attacked at around 2.30am on Sunday as he and a female companion walked along North Boundary Street towards the Shankill area of Belfast. A car, believed to be a BMW, pulled up alongside the pair before a passenger climbed out and carried out the attack.
Police Inspector Nigel Goddard described the apparently unprovoked assault as a "sustained and vicious attack". He said that the man had received serious head injuries. The victim had been on a life support machine at the Mater Hospital.
Meanwhile in Londonderry a gang of three women attacked a woman as she walked through Moss Park just before 11pm on Saturday night.
The woman was attacked from behind and forced to the ground where she was kicked and punched by her assailants.
Her jaw was broken during the attack and she received a number of stitches to a head wound.
