Three NI courthouses set to close
Three of the Province's courthouses are set to close at the end of this year following a review of Northern Ireland's public court system by the government.
The decision announced yesterday by Rosie Winterton, the Minister responsible for the Northern Ireland Court Service, means that courthouses in Clogher and Cookstown will close at the end of year and then transfer to the new courthouse at Dungannon. While court business currently conducted in rented accommodation at Kilkeel will transfer to Newry courthouse at the end of the year.
Meanwhile the future of Banbridge, Larne and Limavady courthouses have been safeguarded, however business at Limavady will be restricted to magistrates’ courts for cases concerning adults.
The changes were announced in response to a public consultation about ‘Court Accommodation in Northern Ireland 2001 – 2010’ yesterday in the House of Commons.
The Minister added that the Court Service is to conduct a feasibility study in the North Down area about the feasibility of replacing the existing courthouses at Bangor and Newtownards. In addition consideration will also be given to upgrading or replacing the courthouse at Lisburn.
There are currently 26 buildings that house the different court tiers in Northern Ireland – the Court of Appeal, the High Court, the Crown Court, the County Courts, the Magistrates’ Courts and the Coroner’s Courts.
The Minister’s decision means the number of court venues will be cut to 23 during 2003.
