Real IRA suspect held in Republic after arms find

A man suspected of being a member of the Real IRA is currently being questioned by police in the Irish Republic.

The man was one of two people arrested in Limerick on Wednesday evening when police raided a house in the Garrowen area of the city.

Police seized an AK47 assault rifle and grenades during the operation as well as what was described as a considerable amount of ammunition.

The two men are being held at Henry Street Garda station in Limerick.

The arrest is likely to cause further harm to the Real IRA's operations in the Republic following on from the current divisions between its leadership and its members currently residing in southern prisons.

Prisoners in Portlaoise prison issued a statement last month calling on the group's army council to step down amid allegations that funds earmarked for paramilitary operations were being stashed for the personal use of a handful of top-level members.

However it is understood that the no reply to the statement has been forthcoming from the army council.
