Trimble praises Loyalist Commission statement

Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble has commended the Loyalist Commission following its statement yesterday saying it was committed to working toward a new peaceful future for Northern Ireland.

Mr Trimble praised the group and said that if Loyalist groups were serious in helping to restore political stability then they had a positive contribution to make to the ongoing process.

He added: “It is noteworthy that the Loyalists are also calling for action by Republicans to convince them of the IRA’s future intentions. Without validation, Republican words are empty and do nothing to ease tensions in Unionist communities.”

However Mr Trimble is likely to come under fierce criticism from nationalists given that eight men were arrested yesterday in connection to a UVF arms find in Craigantlet in County Down.

The Loyalist Commission is a discussion group which offers a platform for loyalists to air any grievances such as the current east Belfast feud between the UDA and LVF.

It includes representatives of the UDA, UVF and Red Hand Commando paramilitary organisations.
