Police In Clear Over Greysteel Killers
Police detectives did not have sufficient information that could have prevented the 1993 murders of eight people in Greysteel, the Police Ombudsman has found.
An investigation was launched after the SDLP MLA John Dallat made a complaint, saying crucial information he gave to detectives was not acted on.
However, Nuala O'Loan has found no evidence on the claim and also said there was no evidence that convicted killer Torrens Knight was in anyway protected from the rigours of the law, as an alleged informant.
However, Mr Dallat said the report had now put on record his efforts to bring the UFF gang to justice before the atrocity happened.
Eight people were shot dead when the Ulster Freedom Fighters opened fire inside the Rising Sun bar in the County Londonderry village at Halloween 14 years ago.
One of the gunmen shouted "trick or treat" before opening fire on customers.
Four UFF men, including Knight, were given eight life sentences for the murders.
Mrs O'Loan said the issue of whether Knight was a police informant as alleged was not within her remit, but the fact he was convicted of the Greysteel and separate Castlerock murders suggested he was not being protected.
