No Water Rates: But Only For Now

There will be no water charges for Northern Ireland – but only for the present.

Northern Ireland householders will not have to pay separate water bills this year or next, Regional Development Minister, Conor Murphy has said.

However, speaking in the Assembly, he also revealed the Executive’s decision that the following year, consumers will pay two-thirds of their full liability and that full bills will be levied the following year.

In the meantime, water will be paid from the existing rates’ revenue during 2008.

The funding will be £109m - equivalent to £160 of the average household's rate.

He said that the move follows a recent independent review on water, carried out by a team led by Professor Paddy Hillyard.
