Dissident republicans linked to mortar device find
A man has been arrested after a mortar bomb and launcher tube where found in the garage of a house in the mainly nationalist Bogside area of Londonderry.
Police are linking the horizontally-fired Mark 16 mortar to dissident republican paramilitaries.
About 10 houses in and around Elmwood Road, where the device was found, were evacuated following the discovery.
Police were attacked with stones and petrol bombs during and after the operation.
Police Inspector Brian Hume described the find as "extremely significant" and that lives had undoubtedly been saved by the discovery.
SDLP leader, Mark Durkan described the weapons find, and other recent weapon seizures, as a "welcome development".
He added: "Those who stored this mortar device showed no regard for people living in the area.
"Measures which take these weapons of destruction out of use should be welcomed."
