Gardaí foil armed robbery
Gardaí have made arrests after foiling a raid on a cash in transit vehicle taking money to service an ATM machine in Co Kildare.
Coming just as Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan said his department and senior Garda management are under "immense" pressure from the "unprecedented number" of organised gangs in Dublin and other cities, this is very good news indeed.
Gardaí at the scene said the seven men were arrested shortly before 10am this morning as members of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU), the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the National Surveillance Unit intercepted the targeting of the van making a delivery to an ATM at a shopping centre in Celbridge.
The raiders are being held under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at various Garda Stations in Kildare and Dublin.
Four vehicles and a firearm were also seized.
There were no shots fired during the operation and nobody was injured.
It is believed that the operation was part of an ongoing investigation by all three units into a Finglas-based gang.
Justice Minister, Brian Lenihan has also just announced that as organised gangs across the Irish Republic are now such a threat that the Government is considering new legislation that would allow gardaí to plant bugging devices in the homes and vehicles of known gangland criminals.
Today’s police operation seems certain to boost his credibility and help push forward his anti-gang initiatives.
Meanwhile, Fine Gael spokesman for justice Charlie Flanagan also welcomed the arrests: "I would like to congratulate the gardaí on their successful interception of this criminal act.
"There was clearly a high degree of intelligence work involved in this operation on the part of the gardaí.
"This heist is just another example of the daily threat posed by gangland to the security of the State,” he said.
