Iraq Veteran Stabbed For Phone Outside Home Base
An Iraq veteran who has only just returned unscathed from service in the Gulf is now fighting for his life in hospital, after being stabbed in the stomach by a mugger on Monday night.
The 21-year-old solider - who has not be named - is in a serious condition in intensive care following the attack, which happened at around 10.45pm.
It is understood that he was set upon on Commons Road, in the normally quiet garrison town of Ballykinlar, Co Down, as he walked home through the village on his way back to camp after visiting a Chinese restaurant.
Initial reports suggest that the soldier's assailant demanded his mobile phone, and then attacked the victim with a knife when he refused to hand it over.
An Army spokesperson confirmed that a soldier had been seriously hurt in a stabbing incident and said that it was a matter for police investigation.
"The soldier, who is with the 2 Rifles battalion, was very seriously wounded in the stabbing," he said.
"He was walking through what should have been a quiet village when he was asked for his mobile. When he quite properly refused he was then stabbed and seriously injured."
Lieutenant Colonel, Rob Thomson, commanding officer of the 2 Rifles battalion, praised the medical support services for all they have done in helping the young soldier.
A PSNI spokesperson last night appealed for witnesses following the assault: "Anyone who was on the Commons Road, near Ballykinlar Camp, after 10pm on Monday night and who may have witnessed the incident, or anyone acting suspiciously in the area, is asked to contact police at Downpatrick 0845 600 8000," he said.
Anonymous information can also be passed to Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
