Two arrested in connection with Londonderry shooting
Police have arrested two men in relation to the shooting of a bus driver in Co Londonderry last week.
The two, whom police say are being held in relation to 'serious crime', are being questioned over the shooting of 51-year-old Daniel McBrearty on October 6.
Mr McBrearty was driving a group of pensioners back to Londonderry after a day trip to Co Donegal, when he was stopped in the Creggan area. A gang of three armed and masked men boarded the bus and beat him with a hammer before shooting him in both legs.
From his hospital bed, Mr McBrearty blamed the IRA for the shooting, claiming it was in retaliation for an incident last year when he and his nephew beat off an IRA attack on their home. His nephew has since moved to England fearing IRA reprisals.
Reacting to the shooting incident, the then First Minister David Trimble said: "Sinn Fein leaders ask to be trusted. How much trust can they expect when this is how republicans treat members of the Catholic community?"
The Northern Ireland secretary is expected to rule on whether the IRA was involved in the shooting – and so breach its ceasefire.
Elsewhere, a teenager was shot in a paramilitary-style attack in north Belfast last night.
The 19-year-old was shot in the leg at around 7pm in Hogarth Street in the Tigers Bay area. He was later taken to hospital.

Detectives have renewed an appeal for information following a deliberate arson attack at a vacant property in the Weaver's Grange area of Newtownards. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 17 November, 2023. Police and firefighters were called to the scene at around 12:40am.

Arson Attack On 5G Mast In West Belfast
Detectives in Belfast are investigating a suspected arson attack on a 5G mast in the Andersonstown Road area. The incident occurred around 9.55pm on Wednesday, November 13th. Detective Sergeant Faulkner confirmed that officers attended the scene alongside the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, who successfully extinguished the blaze.

Exiled man returns to Province
A man who was forced to leave Northern Ireland by the IRA has reportedly returned home. Joseph McCloskey, 30, fled Londonderry in April 2001 after receiving death threats from the IRA following an incident in which he and his uncle, Danny McBrearty, fired shots at a gang armed with guns who where trying to break into his house.
