Empey hails 'vision' of hotel development
Trade Minister Sir Reg Empey has hailed the "vision, commitment and partnership" that has seen the establishment of a £13.8 million hotel in Londonderry.
The hotel, which includes multi-purpose conference rooms, a function suite and full leisure facilities, is expected to employ around 85 people.
Speaking at the official opening of the 145-bedroom showpiece development at Queen’s Quay, Sir Reg paid tribute to the hotel’s promoters who developed the project with support from the Northern Ireland Tourist Board’s Tourism Development Scheme and the International Fund for Ireland, along with substantial investment from Great Southern Hotels.
Sir Reg said: “Strategic partnership in the development of key projects is vital for enhancing the local infrastructure for tourism and other business and leisure activities.
"Equally significant are the opportunities to develop local capabilities and skills in the day-to-day operations of the hotel afforded through this development. Genuine partnership between government departments and agencies, the private sector and community interests is essential if we are to create and experience the benefits from a more dynamic Northern Ireland tourism industry."
City of Derry Hotels was offered £2.25 million in financial assistance under the NITB Tourism Development Scheme in October 1998, £1 million from the Department of Social Development through the Londonderry Development Office and £0.5 million from the International Fund for Ireland towards the costs of the project.
The minister went on to say that development represented a "key theme" of NITB’s corporate plan entitled 'Growing Tourism Together'. The plan's three key objectives are to pursue international promotion, to package tourism products to meet customer needs, and to promote partnership between public and private sector.
Sir Reg added: “I am confident that the hotel will contribute to the exciting renewal of the city that has enjoyed spectacular regeneration in recent years and is focused on the further development of the tourist industry.
“This superb hotel will contribute to placing this city firmly on the world map as a quality, attractive, historic and friendly destination.”
