Lifeboat 'Rescue' Abandoned

An operation to save a lifeboat that ran aground off Rathlin Island trying to assist a troubled rib boat has been called off.

Efforts by a Ballycastle fishing vessel and the Larne lifeboat have failed to free the stricken boat, the 'Katie Hannan' whose crew jumped to the safety of Rathlin's rocky coast after a large wave swept the ship onto the shore at around 7.30pm on Tuesday.

No-one was injured in the incident and the people on board the original vessel which was in difficulties was taken to safety by Rathlin Coastguard.

A spokesman for the RNLI said a tugboat from Derry would attempt to free the £2million lifeboat at high tide, during daylight hours.

Colin Williams, Inspector of Lifeboats for RNLI Ireland, said: "The Larne lifeboat crew, helped by local fishermen from Ballycastle struggled for several hours in very difficult sea conditions to attempt to refloat the Portrush Lifeboat.

"The Rathlin Island Coastguard team greatly assisted rescue efforts from ashore and the operation was efficiently co-ordinated by Belfast HM Coastguard."

A rescue helicopter has also been employed to assist the lifeboat’s plight.
