Garda Killer Freed After Serving Sentence

One of the four men convicted of the manslaughter of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe at Adare, Co Limerick has been released from Castlerea Prison today.

Jeremiah Sheehy received a 12-year sentence for his role in the 1996 IRA raid on Adare Post Office in Co Limerick in which Garda McCabe was killed.

Michael O'Neill, one of the other three involved in the incident, was released from Castlerea Prison last May after serving eight years.

It is expected that the two remaining men, Kevin Walsh from Patrickswell and Pearce McAuley from Strabane, who are both serving 14-year sentences in connection with the killing, will be released next year.

The men were all imprisoned in 1999 of the killing of Garda McCabe, who was shot 14 times during the botched robbery.

Covering the release of O'Neill in 2007, it was reported that Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams said the Irish Government agreed terms with the party in 2003 and again in 2004 for the gang to be set free, as part of a deal to restore Northern Ireland's power-sharing executive.

He said: "Release of the Castlerea prisoners was part of an agreed sequence of statements and actions."

The first of the four to be released, O'Neill had been given a standard remission of 25% for good behaviour off his 11-year sentence.
