Speculation Mounts Over Glenshane Death

Speculation into circumstances surrounding the death of a local man is growing after the man's remains were found in bogland near the Glenshane Pass.

The man has been identified as Gregory Woods, in his 40s, and is understood to have lived in Castledawson. His body was found earlier this week, and a post-mortem examination scheduled, but as yet, no details of its findings have been released.

The PSNI have refused to say whether the death was suspicious, but speculation has been growing in his hometown of Maghera that he was the victim of an assault.

Sinn Fein Councillor Sean Kerr, a friend of the Woods family has spoken out to stem the wave of speculation throughout the town.

He said: "I don't think anyone should be saying anything or adding to the rumour mill until we find out exactly what happened. I don't think anyone should be saying anything which will add to the distress of the family."

Mr Woods' death is the third tragedy to hit the family in recent years. The victim’s father, Roland, committed suicide several years ago while a man believed to be a brother of Mr Woods, was killed in a car accident.
