Batchelors' Athy Plant To Close
Batchelors has announced plans to close its packaging operation in Athy in Kildare with the loss of 16 jobs.
The food-processing company is to move the operation in June, to a new €1m facility in the Cabra area of Dublin.
Speaking after learning of the impending closure, Labour spokesperson on Community and Rural Affairs Jack Wall said Batchelor is an important employer, offering work to generations of Athy people and its closure will be hard hitting in the town.
He said: "Only last week I received a reply to a question asked of the Minister for Enterprise where he expressed his opinion that he is satisfied that the strategies being pursued by the IDA will continue to bear fruit in terms of investment and job creation for the people of Kildare.
"Unfortunately in my constituency, this strategy has seen only 3 visits from potential investors to IDA and other suitable sites in 5 years".
Batchelors has said it will continue to source peas for its canning plant from farmers in the Athy region.
