Europe secure unexpected Ryder Cup victory

Golf's Ryder Cup was back in European hands today after yesterday's defeat of the USA at the Belfry.

Ireland's Paul McGinley secured victory by halving his match in the final hole against Jim Furyk despite two matches still being played.

In the end Europe won by 15 ½ points to the USA's 12 ½ after standing level 8-8 overnight on Saturday.

However, it was European captain, Sam Torrence's bold decision to start with his best players that paid dividend's on the final day.

Colin Montgomerie made the best possible start with a 5&4 win over Scott Hoch before Welshman Phillip Price beat world number two Phil Mickelson 3&2.

It was performances such as Price and McGinley's, which helped secure victory despite being rank outsiders before the start of the tournament.
