Royal Irish Fly Out As Afghanistan Death Confirmed

As around 100 TA part time 'rangers' from 2 Royal Irish in Northern Ireland deploy as a fully formed company for Afghanistan - alongside their regular army colleagues - it has been confirmed that a soldier from 40 Commando Royal Marines has been killed in an explosion.

It happened on Wednesday, with one other marine also injured in the incident, and since described as "walking wounded".

The Marines, from the 40 Commando Royal Marines Battlegroup, were taking part in an outreach patrol in Viking vehicles to disrupt enemy forces north of Sangin in the southern Afghan Province of Helmand when they were involved in the explosion.

The marine was pronounced dead at the scene before he and the injured soldier were evacuated to the ISAF medical facilities at Camp Bastion, where the injured marine received treatment for a minor injury.

Meanwhile, when deployed, it has been announed that the Royal Irish Battle Group, which is part of the elite 16 Air Assault Brigade, will be a substantial 600-strong force.
