Rape Shocks Kilkeel
The seaside fishing town of Kilkeel has been shocked by the rape of a teenage girl in the Co Down town at the weekend.
The 17-year-old girl was allegedly attacked in the Greencastle Street area at approximately 11.30pm on Friday.
Her attacker is described as being in his late teens, 5ft 10ins tall, of thin build and with short brown hair.
Mayor of Newry and District Council, Michael Cole, who lives in Kilkeel, said people in the seaside town were shocked by the incident He said: "These things shouldn't happen in this area and it is terrible to think it did happen.
"I hope anybody who saw anything, no matter how small, reports it to the police because people who commit a crime like this need to feel the full wrath of the law," said the SDLP Councillor.
However, while closed circuit television cameras were recently installed in the centre of Kilkeel, these are not yet operational and will be of no help in tracking the attacker.
"We just had CCTV put in but unfortunately it is not up and running," said Mr Cole. "If they had been installed, there is a good chance the assailant would have been captured on the video."
