Minister opens new USEL premises
Minister for Employment and Learning Carmel Hanna has officially opened the Ulster Supported Employment Limited's (USEL) new premises today.
USEL was established in 1962 to provide sheltered employment for severely disabled people but merged with the Workshops for the Blind in 1980, and now employs over 80 people in the manufacture of beds, sports and travel bags.
The factory is located on Cambrai Street between the Shankill and Crumlin Roads, after being resited from their previous premises in nearby Lawnbrook Avenue.
Speaking during the opening, Mrs Hanna said: “I am pleased that my department was able to help USEL to move into this excellent new factory, and I am delighted that so much developmental work is taking place on these premises. It is good to know that USEL is moving forward so positively.
“Through a range of programmes, USEL supports almost 1,000 people with disabilities in public and private sector organisations throughout Northern Ireland.”
The Minister also unveiled a plaque to commemorate the occasion.
USEL provides supported employment opportunities in their factory premises and with a number of other employers.
They are also contracted, with a number of other providers, to deliver the Employment Support and New Deal for Disabled People Job Broker programmes on behalf of the Department for Employment and Learning.
