Security Beefed Up For Causeway Hospital Staff
Extra security measures have now been taken at a regional hospital in Co Londonderry.
The move came just a month after two nurses in the Accident and Emergency Department of Coleraine's Causeway Hospital were violently assaulted by a pair of drunken women last week.
The attackers punched the nurses in the face, before throwing a chair at members of staff.
However, they managed to flee in a taxi before police arrived.
Staff at the hospital have since insisted that security guards are required in order to avoid any such incidents in the future.
The security team is being put in place this week in recognition of complaints from other Causeway Hospital staff who claimed no-one was available to respond to 'panic alarms' previously issued to them.
The union Unison has also welcomed the additional security measures noting that yet another attack on a nurse took place last week.
The woman was slapped in the face by a drunken patient, again in the Accident and Emergency Department.
The NI Executive Health Minister, Michael McGimpsey, speaking today, said he wouldn't rule out seeking custodial sentences for anyone attacking medical staff, given the serious light in which such assaults are viewed and the 'wasted' money diverted into providing security measures.
