Economic development forum meets in Belfast

The Economic Development Forum (EDF), a ministerial advisory body, has met today at the Institute of Directors’ Headquarters in Belfast.

In a meeting themed on the importance of partnership – similar in tone to the US-Ireland business summit – discussions centred on how to enhance the local economy by working in partnership with all sectors, public, private, community and voluntary.

At the meeting, Sir Reg emphasised the importance of the capacity of the EDF to meet the targets it sets.

He said: “There is no point in setting targets if we don’t then agree what steps we will each take to help meet them. By collectively focusing attention and actions on the key priorities identified by the Forum, I am confident that all sectors can make a major contribution to securing Northern Ireland’s future economic success.”

The Forum members also heard an update from Employment Minister Carmel Hanna on the work of the Employability Taskforce.

Following on from the forum's last meeting on June 20, the EDF launched its first publication – ‘Working Together for a Stronger Economy’ – which assessed the priorities necessary to ensure the economy is significantly strengthened during the period to the year 2010.

At the time of publication, the EDF indicated that this was the first stage in a much longer-term process – a process which continued at today's meeting.

The EDF plans to produce a more detailed Action Plan describing the specific actions key contributors will take to bring about improvement in Northern Ireland’s economic performance by the end of this year.

The Economic Development Forum was established in 1999, following a recommendation in the Strategy 2010 Report, to provide a formal mechanism through which a wide range of key organisations could advise Ministers in the Northern Ireland Administration on issues relating to the development and future competitiveness of the Northern Ireland economy.

Membership to the body includes both government and major social partner organisations.
