Ministers meet on cross-border security
Secretary of State John Reid and the Irish Justice Minister, Michael McDowell, have met at Hillsborough Castle today to discuss a number of cross-border security issues.
The meeting, which forms part of a series of regular bi-lateral meetings, dealt with security issues of mutual concern and was the first to be attended by the newly appointed Justice Minister as well as new PSNI chief constable Hugh Orde.
The Secretary of State and the Justice Minister commended the continuing high level of co-operation between the security forces and reaffirmed their determination to take all possible measures to deal with the threat poised by terrorists.
Security assessments were provided by the Chief Constable and Garda Commissioner, and other issues such as a joint Garda-PSNI review for dealing with organised crime were also discussed. The two police services also outlined areas for co-operation such as personnel exchanges and joint investigation teams. (MB)
