Olympic Hopeful To Appeal Drug Ruling

County Down Olympic swimming hopeful Andrew Bree is expected to launch an appeal after testing positive for a banned substance.

In a statement issued by the 26-year-old's family on Wednesday, it stated the Helen's Bay born, US-based swimmer had "never knowingly taken a banned substance".

It has been revealed he believes he may have unwittingly taken a stimulant contained in an over-the-counter decongestant. Bree tested positive for levmethfetamine, which is found in the US version of a Vicks inhaler, but not in the UK version.

Bree, the only Irish swimmer to have qualified for this summer's Olympic Games in Beijing was a silver medalist in 2003 in Dublin. He finished fifth at the Championships in this main event, the 200m breaststroke.

However, his place in the Olympics is in doubt after his drug test failure at the European Short Course Championships in Hungary in December 2007.

The statement from his family also said: "He will move to clear his name as quickly as possible so that he can continue preparations for the Beijing Olympics."
