IFI jobs concern discussed by Ministers
Ministerial discussions have taken place in the margins of the US-Ireland Business Summit in Washington on the difficulties being faced by Irish Fertilisers Industries (IFI).
Sir Reg Empey, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment for Northern Ireland and Mary Harney, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment in the Republic of Ireland met to discuss the problems facing the company.
Speaking after the meeting, Sir Reg said: “The company has plants in Belfast, Arklow and Cork. Last month the future of the Cork operation was under review by management and this gave rise to fears that there might be implications for the Belfast plant.
“Earlier this week, before I left for Washington, I held discussions with a trade unions delegation from Irish Fertilisers Industries, to hear their concerns as to the future of the Belfast manufacturing plant. At that meeting I said I would raise the matter with Ms Harney this week and this I have done.
“The situation is very fluid at present but we have agreed to keep in close touch with each other on the matter.”
Fears about jobs at the IFI plant in Cobh, County Cork grew earlier this week when a deputation of workers' representatives contacted local TD's to highlight their concern that the plant may close in the face of a downturn in the fertiliser market.
The company currently employs 650 people at the three plants in Ireland.
The Cobh facility produces liquid ammonia which is transported to the other plants where it is used in the manufacture of fertiliser.

Woman Arrested In Connection With Drugs Factory Discovery
A woman has been arrested after a drugs factory was discovered by police in L'Derry. Cannabis plants worth an estimated street value of £250,00 were found at a property on the Larch Road in Dungiven on Saturday. Extensive examinations were carried out at the house. The woman, 38, is assisting police with their enquiries.

Traffic Warning For South Belfast Ahead Of Northern Ireland Match
Road users are advised to plan for potential traffic delays in the south Belfast area on Friday, 15th November due to the UEFA Nations League football match between Northern Ireland and Belarus. The match will take place at Windsor Park, kicking off at 7.45pm, and it is expected that around 18,000 supporters will attend.
